Last Monday, I attended a Respect Rally which was organized by Courtney Macavinta, co-author of the best-selling book for teen girls RESPECT. She put up a video that said 75% of teenage girls who read a fashion magazine become depressed. In our American society, women are supposed to be blonde, skinny, and blue-eyed. In the Middle East, women are supposed to have light skin. Around the world, women have to meet a certain standard to be "beautiful." In America, especially in California, there is a diversity of cultures from Middle Eastern to Filipino. So how is it possible that every girl in America should be blonde and blue-eyed? When girls see a "perfect" image of how a women should be, they have a desire to look like that image. Their self esteem lowers because they know they could never have perfect light skin and blonde hair. Now you're thinking what can we do about it. To raise these girls self-esteem, they need to realize that they are beautiful and that changing themselves to be something they are not can hurt them. A great way to spread this message is organizing a Respect Rally for local high school students. Visit www.respectrx.com and organize a rally today.
